DEMONSTRATIONS AND WORKSHOPS AVAILABLE

Lois Macknik is available for fiber arts demonstrations and workshops in
central and northern New Jersey. Weaving, needlefelting, spinning on a drop
spindle, and basketry demonstrations and workshops can be scheduled for
children or adults at your site. Individual instruction can be arranged in her
home studio in Annandale, N.J. Demonstration fees vary depending on the
distance traveled and whether selling is permitted. Group workshop fees are
$100, with an additional cost per student in some cases. Lois dresses in
period costume when appropriate.
WEAVING DEMONSTRATION
Viewers will weave on a two-harness loom and learn how a four-harness
loom creates patterns. Samples of various types of weaving will be on
display.
HANDS-ON SHEEP-TO-SHAWL DEMONSTRATION
Viewers will participate in the process of making wool into cloth. They will
card wool, try spinning on a drop spindle, and weave on a table loom. A
sampler of natural dyed yarns will show the colors that result from dyeing
with common plants and trees.
NEEDLEFELTING DEMONSTRATION
Viewers will see the process of needlefelting and the types of items that can
be produced.
BASKETRY DEMONSTRATION
Viewers will see contemporary and antique baskets made from different
materials and learn how they were made.

HANDS-ON WEAVING WORKSHOP
Participants will see how various types of looms work and what can be woven
on each. They will weave a small item on one type of pre-warped loom.
Class lasts 1 to 1 1/2 hours and is limited to 10 students. Materials fee of $2
for yarn.
WEAVING IN COLONIAL TIMES WORKSHOP
Participants will learn about the weaving done at home and by professional
weavers during colonial times. They will card wool, spin yarn, and see the
colors that result from dyeing with common plants and trees as well as
dyestuffs that could be purchased, such as cochineal (insects from Mexico)
which produced red. They will learn how a four-harness loom is threaded and
treadled to weave fancy patterns, and be able to weave on a two-harness
loom. This is suitable for school or girl scout groups. Students will
experience each of the processes but will not complete an individual project.
Class lasts 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
INKLE LOOM WORKSHOP
Participants will design a warp-faced belt or bookmark, warp an inkle loom,
and weave a band 1 or 2 inches wide. Limited to 6 students. Class lasts 2
hours. Materials fee of $2 for yarn.
NEEDLEFELTING WORKSHOP
Participants will needlefelt a small animal of their choice. ADULTS ONLY.
Class lasts 2 hours. Material fee of $5 includes 2 felting needles, a small
foam pad, instruction sheet, and fleece for one animal.
SPINNING WORKSHOP
Participants will learn to spin wool using a drop spindle. Class lasts 1 1/2
hours. Materials fee of $12 includes a drop spindle and fleece.
ROUND REED BASKET WORKSHOP
Participants will make a small round reed basket. Materials fee of $2 for reed.
Class lasts 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
SUITABLE FOR THIRD GRADE AND UP.
TWINED ROUND REED BASKET WORKSHOP
Participants will make a small round reed basket using twining techniques.
They will learn how to add color to produce different pattern effects. Class
suitable for teenagers and adults. Materials fee of $4 for reed. Class lasts 2
hours,
PINE NEEDLE BASKET WORKSHOP
Participants will make a basket by coiling pine needles. Suitable for
teenagers or adults. Materials fee of $20. Full day class.
