Lois Macknik began weaving in 1972, making belts on an inkle loom.
After she acquired her first floor loom in 1976, she began to weave
dollhouse rugs. Over the years she expanded her array of full size
functional handwoven items, using traditional patterns. She also
added spinning, basket making, kumihimo (Japanese braiding), and
natural dyeing to her repertoire.
In 2001 Lois began needlefelting. She enjoys making 3 dimensional
animals, character heads, and ornaments because of their unique
character, No two ever look quite the same.
Lois currently teaches traditional crafts to children at the Red Mill
Museum Village in Clinton and at Crane House in Montclair. She
frequently does hands-on demonstrations of weaving, spinning,
needlefelting, or basketmaking at historical sites, county fairs, and
other venues in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Lois markets her weaving and needlefelting at craft shows
throughout central and northern New Jersey and through this
website. She currently lives in Annandale, N.J. in Hunterdon County.
